Minor Release

Zammad 5.3

ยท We have so much to tell you! 5.3 brings new features, bug fixes, and a cool new dark mode ๐ŸŒ‘
Also: Important announcements for future Zammad versions!

1. ๐Ÿ“ Admin Interface For Managing Ticket Templates

Previously, ticket templates could be created and saved from within the ticket form. From now on, you have more control as you need advanced permissions to create a new template. Under "Settings" you can find a new tab "Templates". Here multiple templates can be created, deleted, and edited.

Within this update, there is also a small bug fix. If changes were made to the text fields and tags in the form and then another template was selected, the fields were previously overwritten. From now on the inputs are merged, and/or the previous ones are kept.

Documentation: Read more about Ticket Templates.

2. ๐ŸŽŸ๏ธ Reopening Tickets

When customers reply to closed tickets, there were previously two settings options: The ticket is reopened or a new ticket is created. As of 5.3, there is now a new option, where you can set a specific time period in which the ticket will be reopened. After that period, new tickets will be created automatically.

Documentation: Read more about reopening Tickets.

3. ๐ŸŒ‘ Dark Mode

In Version 5.3 you can choose the dark side. To switch between modes simply click on your profile picture or press "d" on your keyboard.

Documentation: Read more about Dark Mode.

The Zammad login page is now even more customizable. You can add custom links to the login page, such as links to the terms and conditions or privacy policy. In the course of this, checkboxes can also be added when creating tickets via the form, for example, to accept the terms and conditions.

Documentation: Read more about Custom Links and Checkboxes.

5. ๐Ÿ”‘ Disable Classic Password Login | Custom Text For SAML Log-In Button

The classic password login was still visible when using third-party logins to log in to Zammad. This could cause some confusion. With 5.3 comes a new option. If you have active third-party logins, you can hide the classic password log-in.

Another new feature is the labeling of the SAML button. This labeling can now be set individually as the name SAML can lead to confusion.

Documentation: Read more about Disabling Classic Login and Custom SAML Button.

6. ๐ŸŒ Translations

With version 5.3 the translations into Croatian and Serbian (Cyrillic & Latin) are now 100% complete.

๐Ÿšจ Important Announcement: MySQL Deprecation

Zammad is designed to provide our users with a secure and stable platform that delivers a convincing performance. For this, the choice of supported database systems is crucial. After much deliberation and based on our many years of experience, we have decided that Zammad will only support PostgreSQL as a database in the future. However, this change will not take effect until Zammad 7.

Until then, no new installations should be set up with MySQL/MariaDB. Existing systems will continue to be supported but must be migrated to PostgreSQL until the release of Zammad 7. For this purpose, we have provided a detailed migration guide that can be used to migrate existing systems to PostgreSQL free of charge.

This decision was not easy for us. Nevertheless, it is necessary to further develop Zammad with reasonable effort and to keep it reliable.

Breaking Changes & Deprecations

Search Index Rebuild Needed

To improve the performance of search indexing (in the use of organizations even very start to improve) the search index must be rebuilt after the update to Zammad 5.3. Running the command zammad run rake zammad:searchindex:rebuild is mandatory (please allow for appropriate time during the update). Hosted customers can ignore this.

Excel Export Format Change

Starting with Zammad version 6.0, all Excel exports will be exported exclusively in xlsx format. The original xls format will no longer be supported.

Template API Changes

The structure of the ticket templates (options attributes) which are managed via the REST endpoint /api/v1/templates has improved. The old structure is automatically transferred to the new structure during the migration to Zammad 5.3 and the create/update via the REST endpoint /api/v1/templates.

Health Check API Changes

Starting with Zammad 6.0, the "health check" monitoring API at /api/v1/monitoring/health_check will no longer echo the used authentication token in the response payload.

Internet Explorer 11 Support

Starting with Zammad version 7.0, Internet Explorer 11 will no longer be supported.
